Despite Singapore's current prosperity and economic success, the city-state is not immune to highlighting urban poverty. Unfortunately, some of these citizens do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs and have the opportunity to earn a living. The aid of governments and the generosity of others is all that some people have left to them.
When it comes to long-term action, some may criticise the agencies and working government bodies while others go out of their way to help the needy. Indeed, Singapore isn't an absolute near-utopia because of its high levels of poverty and social inequality, but there's still plenty of room for people to create awareness of this urban issue.
Here are three concrete means of creating awareness of the economic crisis of urban poverty:
Raise demand for more jobs.
In Singapore, today's overall unemployment rate is steadily declining according to recent studies, and it contributes to the rise of poverty. Although there is no Singapore poverty line, this problem is still concerning because it amounts to the cause which generates more poverty in society.
Provide workers with a sustainable retirement plan.
Singapore is one of the most expensive countries in the world to live in; but due to social inequality in Singapore, so many retirees may need additional financial assistance and savings. Other workers are finding it increasingly difficult to retire due to the high cost of living and low-interest rates in our area.
Urge the government to increase the minimum wage.
Currently, Singapore is being criticised for its lack of minimum wage laws. The absence of minimum wage laws may necessitate a negotiation between the employer and the employee to set a pay rate. Critics argue that enacting a minimum wage law is essential to reducing urban poverty.
