After overcoming all the dilemmas, you finally decided to sign up for a beginner belly dance class near you. That’s so brave of you! You are probably overwhelmed with all the things that might happen after your recent ordeal and we totally got you since we’ve been there before. To help you clear your mind of the hesitations and what-not, here are some of the things you should expect on your first few days attending a belly dance class in Singapore.

1. No Pain, No Gain

The old saying, “No pain, no gain” is very relatable for your first few lessons. You will probably feel like your abdominal muscles are going to tear and it will be uncomfortable to sit or walk. One thing we can assure you is that all the pain will be worth it. This is your body’s normal response to doing a new exercise. The pain is centred on your abdomen as belly dancing focuses on this area. It normally goes away after a few weeks of continuous practice.

2. Stigmas Can Draw You Back

You’ve chosen the path people are sceptical of and that’s an amazingly big step. However, once you start on your belly dance course, you’ll hear more misconceptions about your newfound hobby. You will probably hear words from your relatives and friends that might make you turn your back on belly dancing, but please do not let them stop you. Remember, it’s them, not you. You’re doing fine.

3. Shyness Has Its Limit

It is normal to feel shy or uncomfortable in your first few lessons. Showing off your belly or more skin can be intimidating at first and that is absolutely understandable. You may wear tight-fitting clothes if you don’t feel like wearing the usual belly dance attire. You will learn, as soon as you get the hang of it, that there’s nothing to be ashamed of and you can confidently do the choreography.

4. You’ll Find Your Social Circle

The fun thing about attending a belly dance class is that you will meet people who share your interest. This social circle is bound by the love for belly dancing and you can ask anyone in the circle for tips and advice.

5. You’ll Learn to Love Your Body

You won’t learn this right ahead in a beginner belly dance class, but you will learn to love your body once you get immersed in it. One of the good things about belly dance is that you will learn to cast away insecurities and self-doubts.

Starting your road to belly dancing is a major step towards understanding yourself. Stay calm and confident all while facing whatever hinders you from doing what you love to do. The belly dance community is here to welcome you and support you on your journey!
